Mexican Melancholy: A Conversation with Jan Smith in GUP Magazine

Interview with Jan Smith by GUP Magazine

GUP Magazine Interview - Jan Smith

Sam Nalley Copley of GUP Magazine approached me a couple of weeks ago to include me in the magazine’s coverage of Mexican Photographers (I know, with a name like mine who would believe I am Mexican!).  We spoke about melancholy and what motivates my work. GUP is one of the leading on-line voices in photography.  The conversation was published today and  you can go to their site or read the conversation here.

A Picture for “Castaways” – Nouadhibou

Poem "Castaways" by David Jibson

Nouadhibou – Castaways

Yesterday I got a kind note from David Jibson, author of Looking for Wisdom Blog (http://lookingforwisdom.tumblr.com).  He thanked me for an image that helped him get inspiration for finishing a poem.  It’s rare for somebody to take the time to let you know they re-posted some of your work, but David’s poem struck me because of its reference to the Aral Sea.  Indeed, this is on the radar for 2011, as soon as I finish my work in Chernobyl.

Nouadhibou – On South Beach

Invite Keller Williams NouadhibouNouadhibou – Exhibiton Jan Smith

Many of you in Miami accompanied my work and shows from afar, and I’m glad to finally reciprocate this support with a little show. A generous invitation by Keller Williams Realty in Miami means that Nouadhibou will be shown in the United States four months earlier and further south earlier than first planned. Although a bit last minute, this all comes together nicely. Miami is where I used to live and is where I began photography, but I’ve never actually exhibited my work there, and I’m excited to finally share this images with you. The inauguration will be held at Keller Williams’ offices on South Beach, literally right across the street from Art Basel, Friday 3rd of December from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m.. The pictures will remain there through January before travelling again. It would be great to see you there! Abrazos, Jan
