The ErdmannContemporary Gallery<\/a> of South Africa is proud to present the work of Mexican photographer, Jan Smith at the 5th Dali International Photography Festival<\/a>, in China.\u00a0 Life is Elsewhere (Short Essays on Decay)<\/em> spans forty images of Jan\u2019s work, across five of his series.\u00a0 The collection will be on display in the city of Dali<\/a> from the 1st to the 5th of August 2013.<\/p>\n
$\"Nouadhibou$ <\/a> $\"AyA$ <\/a>Described by the Cape Times of South Africa as \u201cbeautiful compositions of absence\u201d, and by Japan\u2019s Mainichi Shimbun as \u201ca visual voice that is firm and elegant\u201d, Jan\u2019s work explores the archeology of absence.<\/p>\n
Short Essays on Decay<\/em> features images\u00a0 from the abandoned village of Kolmanskop (Namibia) and the\u00a0island of Gunkanjima<\/a> (Japan), the ship cemetery of Nouadhibou <\/a>(Mauritania), and the nuclear wastelands<\/a> surrounding Chernobyl (Ukraine) and Fukushima (Japan).\u00a0 The carefully composed photographs evoke a paused beauty that invites the viewer to question the concept of progress.<\/p>\n
