Inside the remnants of newspaper cut-outs still hang on the walls: \u00a0a prayer, a meal &#8212; and as mechanics the world over do&#8211; scantily clad women. \u00a0Upstairs, the changing room is littered with boots and grease stained overalls, some are still draped over a seat.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_1203\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-1203\" style=\"width: 540px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><a onclick=\"javascript:pageTracker._trackPageview('\/downloads\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/02\/Mechanic.jpg');\"  href=\"http:\/\/smithjan.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/02\/Mechanic.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-large wp-image-1203 \" title=\"Mechanic\" src=\"http:\/\/smithjan.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/02\/Mechanic-1024x301.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"540\" height=\"158\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-1203\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Mechanic Shop, Pripyat, Jan Smith 2011<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<h2 style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong>Pripyat Swimming Pool<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>Pripyat had various pools, an uncommon trait for a city its size. \u00a0This is the largest pool. \u00a0It has become something of a tourist stop, because of its large (broken) windows and diving platform. \u00a0The main entrance is now overrun with vegetation and rarely seen, as most visitors enter from the other side of the building.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_1204\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-1204\" style=\"width: 540px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><a onclick=\"javascript:pageTracker._trackPageview('\/downloads\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/02\/Pool-.jpg');\"  href=\"http:\/\/smithjan.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/02\/Pool-.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-large wp-image-1204 \" title=\"Pool\" src=\"http:\/\/smithjan.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/02\/Pool--1024x269.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"540\" height=\"141\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-1204\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Pool, Pripyat, Jan Smith 2011<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<h6 style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong>Pripyat Stadium<\/strong><\/h6>\n<p><strong> <\/strong>Once host to athletic competitions, the Stadyon is now lost among birch trees that grow where there used to be volley ball courts. \u00a0In the winter light it reminds me of a pagoda. Views from behind the bleachers are like an Escher painting. In the western part of the field is a structure, perhaps a former ticket booth or entrance.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_1205\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-1205\" style=\"width: 540px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><a onclick=\"javascript:pageTracker._trackPageview('\/downloads\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/02\/Stadyon.jpg');\"  href=\"http:\/\/smithjan.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/02\/Stadyon.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-large wp-image-1205 \" title=\"Stadyon\" src=\"http:\/\/smithjan.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/02\/Stadyon-1024x256.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"540\" height=\"135\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-1205\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Stadyon, Pripyat, Jan Smith 2011<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<h6 style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong>Pripyat Cafe &amp; Observatory<\/strong><\/h6>\n<p><strong> <\/strong>Friends and young couples would gather at the Pripyat Cafe and sip drinks in the shade of the trees by the lake. \u00a0Stained glass lined the south windows.
