Jan Smith

Jan Smith Photographer

I’m self-taught in photography because I originally studied business. For 15 years I kept myself busy as an entrepreneur, and then one day decided to turn a hobby into a new career.

Now I document and create imagery in remote places.  I like the obscure and forgotten. These spaces were historically significant, but are often quickly forgotten, and now rapidly exiting contemporary social memory.  They are modern ruins forming in our lifetime.

Art photography is a challenging place to be because what is shown in galleries and public spaces is often limited to the larger photo collections that are curated by others. It usually entails months or years of research, travel, and editing.  Frequently, a couple of years go by before the work is presented in finished form.

While the large works, are very rewarding, they are really the result of many smaller explorations and experiments–both in terms of geography and personal growth.  I share those “vignettes” here.  They usually consist of a few pictures and my experience discovering these places.

You can also click through to my website and see the larger showcase portfolios.  In between, I add musings on art, photography and equipment.

Thank you for dropping by.

  1. Great Photography. I’m glad you make an effort to save the memories of these lost pieces of history. Recent history is so often forgotten because technology is progressing so fast right now. You have done some stunning work. Thank You.
