In October of 2010 I submitted to the One Life International Photography Contest and included the contest in my review of photography contests. Then I crossed my fingers and intentionally forgot all about it– I’ve worked myself up before, only to receive a “thank you, but no thank you” message, or worse, no answer at all.  Well, the results came in today and I was tremendously happy and surprised to see I was the category winner for “Places”. This is not the same as the Grand Prize of $25,000, but I will get a free camera, so I’m not complaining. Continue reading

Submitting to Photography Competitions

Competitions offer exposure and credibility.  When you win they do wonders to fortify your confidence and help you continue developing your work.  But not all competitions are alike.  Indeed, many are money making machines.  Profits are made from submission fees and royalties from books sold to participants.  Everybody likes to see their work in print and paying $40 for a book showcasing the work of winners and participants is a relatively painless way of satisfying this wish. Submitting to Photography and Art Magazines

Giving your work exposure as an art photographer is more challenging than as a photojournalist.  Your work is not easily digested by the mass media and (heresy!) there are fewer ways of applying your images to commercial purposes. Of course you can solely rely on virtual media, but the power of seeing your work in print is still strong and immensely satisfying. Continue reading
